What's going on around Brisbane Central

The SPARK program sees volunteers help our Year 2 students with reading

Free Parent English class:

Our free Parent English class will recommence after the holidays. With our Music classes moving to the hall on Tuesdays, there will be a change of day. Our class will recommence on Thursday afternoons from 1 pm in the library. The first class will be on Thursday, July 17, 2014 . We look forward to seeing you there!

SPARK program:

Our Spark Reading program concludes this Friday June 27. Volunteers from Norton Rose Fulbright and Hay group have participated in an 9 week program, in which volunteers have read with selected Year 2 students on a weekly basis for about 40 minutes. The students have loved the program and the mentors, and have not only enhanced their reading skills, but have developed greater reading confidence.  We’ll be sad to see our volunteers go! A HUGE thanks to Alina Pugliese who has coordinated the program and to Norton Rose Fulbright and Hay group for have agreed to release their employees every week to support our students.

Thank you:

A MASSIVE thanks  to Miss Brid McGrath, who stepped in at very short notice to take on our Year 1 class while Wendy Fitzgerald needed to take leave.  Brid was a great asset to our staff , and I was very impressed at the speed at which she was able to pick up our  curriculum, and get to know our Year 1 students’ personalities and learning needs . Unfortunately, Brid is leaving us to return to Ireland after a two year working holiday. She will be greatly missed. Thanks Brid!

Our thanks also  to volunteer Shirley Everett , who has been reading with our Year 2 students on a weekly basis over the past two terms.  Shirley is moving on to other volunteering ventures, and we sincerely thank Shirley for her time at our school.

Children’s festival offers learning fun:

Families with children aged eight and under are invited to attend Brisbane children’s festival Out of the Box this June/July. The festival, hosted by Queensland Performing Arts Centre, provides a range of cultural activities designed to support children’s learning, play, curiosity and discovery. Kindy ambassador and children’s entertainer Jay Laga’aia will be performing at the festival.
