Welcome back for Term 3

The new classroom ready to go for students.

Welcome back to Semester 2, and a special welcome to our new students and their families. We hope you enjoy your time at Brisbane Central State School.

The new semester also marks the creation of our eleventh class. We now have two Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 classes! The growth in our lower year levels is indicative of the confidence our local community has in our school.  This semester also marks the commencement of the refurbishment of the former Child Guidance building on the corner of Rogers and Water Streets.  The building will house several classrooms, offices, meeting spaces and withdrawal rooms. We look forward to updating you on the progress throughout the semester.

Sports Carnival:

A HUGE thank you to Mr Dave Johnson and our Year 4 to 7 teachers for running a very smooth Athletics Carnival on Thursday, June 26.  Congratulations to the following Age Champions:

Welcome to new staff and staff changes:

A BIG welcome to Ms Kayleen Morgan who joins our team this semester to take our new Year 1 class.

From today, we welcome Miss Hailey Hammor, who will relieve in our other Year 1 class until Mrs Wendy Fitzgerald returns in early August.

Our Instrumental Music teacher, Colin McIntyre, will be on sick leave for the following two weeks while he recovers from surgery.  We wish Colin a speedy recovery.

This semester, we welcome back Mrs Julie West to our school. Many of you will remember Julie, who replaced Miss Kat McGowan when she went on leave last year.  Julie will be with us until the end of the year.

Senior Choir:

Senior Choir rehearsals will continue on Wednesday mornings, with a second rehearsal scheduled for Thursday lunchtimes. Julie will be working hard to ensure that students are ready for Singfest on Wednesday August 20.

SPARK ceremony:

At the end of last term, we celebrated the completion of our most recent SPARK reading program with volunteers from Norton Rose Fulbright and Hay Group.  Our selected Year 2 students were presented with a book from their mentor and enjoyed a celebratory morning tea together. We’re not sure enjoyed the program more- the students or their mentors! My sincere thanks to our ST:LaN, Alina Pugleise for her hard work in coordinating the program .

We are looking forward to partnering with Navitas again this year to deliver another volunteer program, 1:2:1, which focuses on developing and extending students’ mathematical skills in Year 1.

Changes to newsletter delivery:

As foreshadowed last term, we will transition to a fortnightly newsletter this semester.  We will continue to add news stories to our website/ QSchools app on a weekly basis (every Friday) and regularly update our Facebook and Twitter sites.  If you haven’t already, I urge you to download the free QSchools app from iTunes and Google Play stores today, so you can remain in touch with what is going on around the school.

Electronic delivery of Report cards:

During the last week of term, parents for whom we have a current email address, should have received their child’s report card electronically (via email) . If you did not receive your child’s report card electronically, this may be because your email address was incorrectly entered into our OneSchool system, or you have not provided us with your updated email address. Please ensure that you have informed Carolina Duncan of your correct email address if this has been the case:

Next semester, we will be emailing report cards directly to parents for Years Prep to 5 in place of paper report cards . Paper copies will be available for our Year 6 and 7 students departing for high school.

Changes to classrooms and uniform shop:

Over the holidays, we were very busy preparing for a new classroom and relocating our uniform shop. Our new Year 1 classroom (previously the Music Room), received new paint, flooring, blinds, whiteboard and interactive whiteboard. As this is now a classroom, we appreciate if you do not use this room as a thoroughfare to get from one end of A Block to the other.  Fortunately, this is only a temporary situation.

Our uniform shop has been relocated from the A Block to the garage in the hall. My thanks to Paula Pattison for her endless patience while we relocated the uniforms to their new home.

Thanks to our great staff:

A HUGE thanks to our amazing staff – our cleaners, Shirley Vowles and Maree Lewis, our IT Technician, Matt Duncan, and administration officers, Carolina Duncan and James Price, all came in over the holidays to help ensure that everything was a smooth as possible for our new classroom, and the start of the new semester.

A MASSIVE thanks to our Schools’ Officers Glenn Appleyard and Gary Gradwell , for their enormous efforts moving and relocating furniture, organising and liaising with tradespeople, and generally going the extra mile at all times for our school.
