Principal's Update 15 August 2014

15/08/2014

It’s now halfway through the term! Over the past two weeks, students have been busy completing assessment items for Mathematics and English. These assessments will be providing teachers will information regarding how your child is progressing, that they can share with you during parent-teacher meetings later this term.  Please make sure you keep an eye out for letters from your child’s teacher over the coming weeks inviting you to attend one of these meetings. Please read on for an update about what is going on around school!

Don’t forget, our free Parent English class is now held on Thursdays from 1 to 2.30 pm. All families should have received a flyer last week inviting you to attend these classes. We welcome all parents, regardless of your level of English, to join our volunteer English teachers, Sandra and Allison in the library for a few laughs and to make some friends. My sincere thanks to Allison and Sandra for their ongoing commitment to our school community.

Congratulations to:

  • Alice K, Yasmin T, Angus B, Nadine B, Sonia K, Emily B, Abi K, Shane K, Caitlyn L, Liam S, Grace C and Arya B who completed the High Achievers program at Kelvin Grove State College last Wednesday. A HUGE  thanks to Kelvin Grove State College who host this high quality program for selected students every year.
  • Hans-William C, Jin Wook S, Mathilda L, Alice K and Ashley K who were selected for the Northside Honours Music Camp from Tuesday 9 – Friday 12 September 2014. Our students were 4 of only 140 students from a number of north side schools selected via audition for the camp A HUGE thanks  to Mr Colin McIntyre who came into our school while on leave to record our students so that they could submit their application. Well done to our talent musicians!

Upcoming events:

Singfest: Good luck to our Senior Choir, who will be performing at Singfest Massed Choral Event held between 9:00am and 6.30 p.m. at The Old Museum, 460 Gregory Terrace, Bowen Hills. Singfest is an annual massed choral event for Education Queensland Primary School students in the Metropolitan Region. On the day of the event, each school comes together to workshop set repertoire in a massed choir of all the schools present on the day, culminating in a concert at 5.15 pm. This performance is an exciting opportunity for our young vocalists to sing in a large choral event. Our Senior Choir students should have already received their permission notes and returned these to the office. A HUGE thanks to our Music teacher, Mrs Julie West for preparing the choir for this event in such a short period of time.

Welcome to:

  • Miss Hailey Hammor who will continue to  replace Mrs Wendy Fitzgerald until the end of the term,  while Wendy accesses extended sick leave . A HUGE thanks to Hailey for agreeing to extend her contract to ensure continuity of learning for our Year 1 students.
  • Ms Linda Osbourne, who replaces Miss Kylie Wall on long service leave until the end of this term
  • Mr Leighton Ringma and Mr  Mike Leota will be replacing Gary Gradwell , who accepted a fulltime position at Newmarket State School (his base school) and Mr Glenn Appleyard, who has accepted another job opportunity. A MASSIVE thanks to Glenn for his hard work , commitment and always going above and beyond for our school. We are very lucky to have had Glenn work with us  for the past twelve months, and we are incredibly grateful that our school was able to directly benefit from his expertise, knowledge, work ethic and high expectations. Best of luck to Glenn in his future endeavours.

Parent details update:

It has come to our attention that we have not been updated when our families change address, phone numbers, email addresses and living arrangements. Sadly, we are not aware that these details are incorrect until a child is hurt or ill, or when a teacher wishes to discuss an important issue about their student with their parents. It is imperative that these details for your child are current. Last week,   you would have received a print out of the contact details, emergency contacts and medical conditions for your child that we currently have on file. Please check that the details are correct, note where details are incorrect (or state that all details are correct) and return to the office by Friday August 22.   We will then update our database to ensure that all details are accurate.

At the end of this semester, we will be distributing report cards by email only for students in Prep to Year 5. It is therefore imperative that we have your correct email address stored in our database system. Thank you to the parents who have notified Carolina Duncan of your change of email address following the electronic distribution of report cards. Parents are advised that in your  email settings, you should add oneschool.application@dete.qld.gov.au to your list of safe senders so report card emails are not sent to the Junk folder.

School Opinion Surveys:

Thank you to all the parents/caregivers, students and school staff who completed this year’s School Opinion Survey. We look forward to reviewing our survey results when we receive our school report later this year.

Bookweek Book Sale:

Please send any books you would like to donate for a second hand book sale to the Year 6/7 classroom. We will be conducting the stall on Tuesday August 19 at 8:30 a.m. Prices range between 50 cents and $5. Come and bag a bargain!
