Our holidays were particularly exciting for two of our school captains, Emanuel P and Ashley K, whose names were drawn “out of a hat” to meet with His and Her Royal Highnesses , Prince William and Duchess of Cambridge , Kate, on their recent tour of Australia and New Zealand. We are not sure who was more excited- Emanuel and Ashley, or Miss Kylie Wall, who accompanied the students!

In our first week of school, we commemorated ANZAC Day through our annual ANZAC Service. My thanks to Mrs Annette Somerville for her coordination and organisation of the event, and to our music teacher, Mrs Jenny Battersby, who conducted our school choir in a beautiful rendition of, “The Last ANZAC’. It was lovely to be joined by Robert Cavallucci, member for Brisbane Central . Our Year 6 and 7 students participated in the Children’s ANZAC Service in King George Square later that day also.

Canberra Information Evening:

Thank you to the parents who were able  to come along on Wednesday night to listen our Canberra presentation. If you were not able to attend the evening, please let your child’s teacher know so they can send home the relevant information.  Thanks to our Year 6 and 7 parents who are selling up a storm on Friday afternoons. Their fundraising efforts will be used to reduce the cost of the Canberra trip.

SPARK program

This week, our SPARK program with volunteers from Norton Rose Fulbright & Hay Group kicked off this morning. We welcomed 18 volunteers, who will be providing additional reading practice and support with 9 Year 2 students every Friday, for the next 8 weeks. It is great to be once again, part of this exciting initiative organised by the Australian Business Community Network.

Events Calendar:

Our Term 2 Events Calendar can be found in the support and resources section of the website - Term 2 2014 Brisbane Central Calendar.pdf.  As you can see, we have a very  full term planned! The events are uploaded to our website, which in turn, updates our QSchools app. If you have not already uploaded the free QSchools app to your smart phone or tablet via the iTunes or Google Play stores , I would recommend that you do so now.  We also provide information about school events through our Facebook page , “Brisbane Central State School”, or via Twitter , “Bris_Cent_SS”. We have now reached over  100 “likes” on our Facebook page!

UQ Sport:

UQ Sport also recommenced this week for our Year 4-7 students. Over 6 weeks, students will be learning Aussie Rules Football, with coaches Aaron and Zac.
Aaron is an experienced AFL player and also under takes Aus Kick coaching on a regular basis, and Zac is a Queensland AFL representative and also plays for the University of Queensland.  This is a great opportunity for our older students to broaden their experiences of organised sport.
